The official twitter account for The Pokémon Company International has officially announced the brand-new animated series Pokémon: Hisuian Snow, which will premiere on May 18th, 2022.

Here’s the official tweet, which includes the premise for the show and a stunning promo picture:

This should please fans of Pokémon Legends: Arceus, which relied more on exploration and research than plot, unlike the traditional franchise installments. But it’s a unique setting, with plenty more to explore!

In Hisui, an older version of Sinnoh, Pokémon and humans still lived apart. On the official website, Pokémon explains that the show will follow a boy named Alec and his relationship with a Zorua.

Pokemon Legends: Arceus’ page for Zorua reveals that this Pokémon migrated to Hisui after being driven out by humans. This makes Zorua a perfect fit for the Hisuian Snow series to show how humans and Pokémon could learn to live together.

Both Zorua and Alec would have a lot of bias to overcome. Alec’s father even raised him to believe that humans shouldn’t live with Pokémon.

Pokémon: Hisuian Snow will be a three-part limited series, and will only be available on Pokémon TV or the Pokémon YouTube Channel.

WIT Studio and promotional artwork

Pokémon: Hisuian Snow is produced by WIT Studio, which is probably best known for the hit show Attack on Titan. This may cause some viewers to worry, given the graphic nature of that series. In fact, most of the shows that WIT Studio has produced are quite mature.

Thankfully, you might also look to their show Ranking of Kings, a successful anime series for younger audiences that expertly handles youthful themes with respect for the viewers.

And if the promotional image is any representation of Pokémon: Hisuian Snow, then the art direction will be quite different from traditional mature anime. The artwork pays homage to the manga origins of the franchise with a creative design and beautiful colors.

The visuals of Arceus were one of the larger gripes for longtime fans, so it’ll be thrilling to see that world come to life in animated form.

With so much wild nature to explore, and the artistic freedom of a limited series, Pokémon: Hisuian Snow has enormous potential to distinguish itself from the classic Pokémon anime.
