Nintendo and Pokemon are kind of notorious about being stingy with how other people use their copyrights, so it’s a bit of a surprise to see them release this library of music that people can use to enjoy the sounds of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. This is an interesting little experiment Nintendo and Game Freak have put together, and we will have to see if this sort of thing catches on in the future.
While you can download and listen to it via the website, it does come with the caveat that you can only use it for “personal video and music creation” in the tweet announcing it.
If you’re a content creator and are hoping to use some of this great music, you will need to make sure to keep a careful eye on the permitted uses section of the website. It does seem, based on my interpretation of it, that you would be able to use the music in a video or stream via one of the many popular social media platforms. You will just want to make sure that you aren’t charging people to get access to the content or the full release of the content.
Here’s a brief bit from the permitted uses social networking services section:
- Release a video that uses the Audio as background music (“BGM”) on video Distribution Sites or SNS;
- Release a video of your performance of the Audio on video Distribution Sites or SNS;
- Release a video that uses the Audio as BGM for dance, drama or scene on video Distribution Sites or SNS;
- Release a musical work that uses the Audio on video and music Distribution Sites or SNS; or
- Use of the Audio as BGM for your own website.
While content creators will want to tread carefully, fans of Pokemon and game soundtracks can rejoice! You get the high quality sounds of the popular Pokemon Diamond and Pearl games that you can download and listen to as you want! I imagine if this ends up being popular for fans that we could see previous games added in the future.
