The N64 module for Polymega has brought high-definition N64 gaming to the platform, but retro enthusiasts eager to revisit Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles on the same system did not get a chance. However, it appears that this function is going to come soon.

Currently, the N64 module allows users to dump Game Boy and Game Boy Color ROMs to Polymega’s internal storage through the N64 Transfer Pak. Still, playing these dumped ROMs is not yet possible, but just being able to do it at all is good. What we know is that the functionality is on the way, with Polymega developers confirming a dedicated Game Boy and Game Boy Color emulator, codenamed “Cerberus,” is in development.

The delay in Cerberus’s implementation stems from the development team prioritizing ensuring optimal N64 support before tackling additional features. Testing everything with a limited team proved time-consuming, leading to deferring some features, including Cerberus, to focus on updating the N64 emulator to make it as solid as possible (Thanks TimeExtension).

This focus culminated in the recent release of the system software update v1.1.30, which brought significant improvements to N64 emulation alongside new features like the “Collected Game Filter” and adjustable game speed options. While a specific release date for Cerberus remains unannounced, Polymega developers have acknowledged its importance and encouraged users to stay tuned for updates through the official Discord server and announcements.

Polymega is pretty interesting altogether, allowing anyone to use their old discs and game cartridges on emulators. They’re even working on an app so that you won’t need their emulators at all. The downside is that you can buy emulators for Game Boy games on your phone. I use My Boy!, which was only five dollars, and can play any Game Boy game. So, it’s hard to see why someone would want to wait to play on an emulator. Still, it’s good news that it’s coming.
