Portal, one of the most brilliant games of the industry, let alone the puzzle genre, has revealed a new side-by-side look for the improvements fans can expect in its big RTX update. Portal’s RTX upgrade will be a free DLC for all Portal owners, available on December 8th, 2022.
Here’s the full video on YouTube, which shows off the effects of Nvidia’s DLSS 3 technology:
It’s important to note that Nvidia’s RTX ray tracing technology is on for both sides of the video. Instead, the comparison focuses on DLSS 3, Nvidia’s latest step forward in AI-powered graphics.
While ray tracing emphasizes lighting and reflections, the DLSS 3 has the ability to create completely new frames and optimize the overall image quality. DLSS 3 also adds Nvidia’s Reflex to boost responsiveness, in addition to a handful of other spec improvements.
The comparison video certainly looks promising, as the DLSS 3 appears to be adding quite a lot of visual information. But it feels a little strange and unfair for the game to run around 20 frames per second without the DLSS 3 on, making it much more difficult to determine its realistic effects. This suggests a sense of hesitation on Nvidia’s part.
Also, fans were quick to notice that the graphics card information was not actually revealed, so it’s hard to tell exactly how much more quality Portal with RTX will offer compared to a typical system that players are currently running.
Either way, Portal with RTX is still a free update, so players will get to judge for themselves soon enough. And although Portal may not necessarily be the most viable game for such a visual treatment, it is still a high bar for the gaming industry that deserves any kind of attention.
