Riot Games has shared more details about Project L, an upcoming 2D tag fighter set in the world of Runeterra. In today’s dev diary, Executive producer Tom Cannon and game director Shaun Rivera showcase the Duo Play system and talk about the evolution of Project L. A full match with developers Patrick “pattheflip” Miller (Ekko), Caroline “Riot Shyvana” Montano (Ahri), Maxine Virtue (Ahri), and Dan Sell (Darius) was also featured, giving fans a closer look at the fighting dynamic of Project L.
From the project’s inception, Riot Games has strived to redefine the fighting game genre, infusing Project L with fresh and innovative ideas that promise to elevate the gaming experience for fighting game fans. At the core of this innovation is the Duo Play system. Unlike traditional tag-based fighters, Project L introduces a 2v2 team-based fighting format. This means that teams of two players can face off together in the same match, with each player piloting a single champion.
The Duo Play system draws inspiration from tag team wrestling, in which one player actively engages in the on-stage combat while the other waits offscreen for their teammate to find the right moment to tag them in. Players can opt for various setups, including 1v1, 2v2, or even 2v1 matchups, all designed to provide a fluid and rewarding experience for players on stage and off-screen.
Further enhancing the depth of gameplay, Project L also features a Fuse system, which allows teams to customize how their champions play together before the start of each match. With fuses, players can choose between powerful synergies that change up their duo’s play style. For instance, the ‘2x Assist’ fuse allows the team to throw out two assists back-to-back instead of just one.
Riot Games also made an exciting announcement, revealing that a playable demo version of the game will be available at EVO 2023 event, set to take place from August 4 to 6 at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Attendees at EVO 2023 will have the exclusive opportunity to get hands-on experience with champions such as Darius, Ekko, and Ahri, along with another unannounced Champion.
