Bubble Ghost Remake, an upcoming reimagining of the classic haunted house puzzler, has just been announced from developer VIDIBOND and publisher Selecta Play. The new version will feature completely reworked visuals and audio, as well as additional modes, bosses and more.
A release window has not been confirmed, but it’s expected “soon”. Bubble Ghost Remake will be available on the Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam, where it can be wishlisted today. Although it is partly in Spanish, you can watch the full Bubble Ghost Remake announcement trailer on the Selecta Play YouTube channel:
Bubble Ghost could be considered both a classic and a hidden gem, thanks to its adorable little world and a very clever premise. Players will need to guide a bubble through a variety of obstacles, as opposed to simply leading your protagonist around. This presents a lot of unique opportunities for physics-based gameplay, which was somewhat rare back then.
Today’s trailer deliberately serves up a direct side-by-side comparison of the original and the remake, which is either going to impress or disappoint.
It’s clear that the shiny new graphics look very pretty and refined, which is often fun either way. But the art design leans into slightly creepier territory with its lighting, enemies and obstacles. The protagonist was also given a serious makeover to better resemble an actual human being.
The general cute factor of the original is rather cast aside, though some elements of Halloween playfulness remain. Still, the original was a very simple game, and it is nice to see the devs expand on that with a closer emphasis on storytelling and new modes to play. It will also be a neat little bow for Bubble Ghost Remake to arrive on the Switch, given the original was a Game Boy treasure.
