Rainbow High: Runway Rush, a family friendly adventure title based on the popular fashion dolls, will officially release on September 22nd, 2023.
Developed by Xaloc Studios and published by Outright Games, Rainbow High: Runway Rush will be available on PC, Nintendo Switch, and current or last-gen consoles for PlayStation and Xbox users. You can watch today’s full announcement trailer on the Outright Games YouTube channel:
Rainbow High: Runway Rush already looks similar to other traditional tie-in games. It seems to be loosely held together by mini-games and doesn’t have the best quality, though its color palette and attitude are both bright and upbeat.
Still, Rainbow High: Runway Rush could be serviceable for very young audiences, nonetheless. The premise of the game is centered on completing an art project. So, the game at least encourages players to explore and be creative.
The animated series has been criticized for having a shallow approach. It’s nice to see that the game has mustered a couple of mechanics that introduce basic artwork and tools, namely near the end of today’s trailer. It would be beneficial if the game would at least delve into the same design sophistication of the dolls themselves, which can be quite elaborate.
Overall, Rainbow High: Runway Rush more or less feels like an afterthought, or even a cash grab. Although, some fans have amusingly pointed out that it shouldn’t have shady monetization. For all of the game’s emphasis on creativity, it doesn’t seem to have much of its own, compared to other Outright Games titles.
While unlikely, the features could still introduce something a little more educational, which parents could actually support. And like the dolls themselves, themes of inclusivity and self-expression can also be helpful.
