Call of the Sea VR, a virtual reality redesign for the puzzle adventure from developer Out of the Blue Games and publisher Raw Fury, will officially launch next week on April 13th, 2023. It will be available on the Meta Quest 2, and players can wishlist the game on the Meta Store today. There’s no word on plans for other VR consoles. Here’s the full announcement from Raw Fury’s Twitter feed:
Today’s announcement for Call of the Sea VR was accompanied by the same gameplay trailer that was released back in December 2022. This is a little disappointing, and somewhat surprising, since the devs suddenly revealed that the game launches as soon as next week. Aside from the trailer, there have only been a few VR images to consider.
However, the game itself should still interest longtime fans. Call of the Sea first launched in 2020, featuring gorgeous environments with creative puzzles and a compelling atmosphere. It remains a hidden gem with strong fan reviews, and recently renewed some interest last month when it was free on the Epic Games Store:
Between the 1930’s setting, mystery, and exotic island, there is an overwhelming strangeness that gives Call of the Sea a lot of personality. Since it was already such an immersive world, doubling down on that with a VR game should be very satisfying. Puzzles and adventures are both a natural fit for VR because they involve so much interaction.
Judging by December’s trailer, the visuals in Call of the Sea VR don’t look especially polished. But the new point of view is refreshing, and it hints at all of the mechanics fans would expect from any VR title. Either way, it’s another great reason to revisit a solid and inventive game.
