UnderDungeon, an upcoming adventure RPG from indie dev team Josyan, has just released a brand-new gameplay trailer featuring exploration, new characters, and more. UnderDungeon recently announced a launch date for January 13th, 2023.
It will be available on PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. A release date for PlayStation fans still hasn’t been confirmed. Publisher RedDeerGames uploaded today’s new UnderDungeon trailer on their YouTube channel:
UnderDungeon has always flaunted its playful tone, but in today’s trailer, curious fans got a much clearer feel for the pacing and style of the game.
Previous marketing such as the release date teaser implied some brisk action, all packed into a minute. However, the new gameplay reveals more patience and worldbuilding, and that shouldn’t be a bad thing for most. It may disappoint more casual gamers, who were hoping for retro whiplash and expectations set by previously released gameplay.
Still, today’s footage appears to be very early on in the game, if not the absolute beginning of the story. And it’s nice that players will have the chance to soak up the environments, sound effects, and dialogue.
After all, nostalgic immersion is one of the key reasons this game exists, since it clearly ventures much farther into the past than expected. There is a surprising amount of charm and creativity mustered with this approach, adding in a few modern embellishments.
Publisher RedDeerGames has been largely successful in supporting indies with some degree of strangeness or humor, and UnderDungeon promises both. The art design is cute but whimsical, as reinforced by all of the new characters introduced in today’s footage. The new dialogue and plot also add to the oddball context, which should be its true appeal.
