Renfield: Bring Your Own Blood, a new indie roguelite inspired by the movie Renfield releasing this Friday, has surprised fans of Nicholas Cage (and roguelites) after it suddenly launched into Early Access today.
The game was developed by Mega Cat Studios and published by Skybound Games. It’s currently available on PC via Steam. You can watch a full Early Access launch trailer on the Skybound Games YouTube channel:
Renfield, an upcoming horror comedy twist on Dracula and his notorious henchman, looks just wacky enough to entertain. But following the widespread success of The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, which seems to have reminded everyone why they love Cage, his return to the vampire genre is surely the big draw.
Movie tie-ins are rarely interested in the highest quality, and generally feel like a simple cash grab. However, Renfield: Bring Your Own Blood does look like a genuine roguelite, if a little too simple.
The indie scene is still very much in the age of Vampire Survivors, frequently and perhaps monotonously borrowing from it. So, Mega Cat Studios’ new title based on the most popular vampire of all time feels like a natural fit.
Renfield hasn’t built a lot of buzz just yet, so it remains to be seen if the game tie-in can justify its existence. But the upbeat music, colorful effects, and simple mechanics in Renfield: Bring Your Own Blood do seem to line up with the frenetic and strange trailers for the movie.
Without the IP, this game probably wouldn’t amount to much. But it is a nice curiosity, and likely a fun way to get into the spirit of the movie’s opening weekend. The devs selected the correct genre, art design, and tone. Besides, it’s in Early Access, which means a lot more could be in store. Following the movie premiere, it’ll be interesting to see how this evolves.
