The game developer Void Interactive has apparently experienced a major data breach, with reports suggesting that more than 4TB of data and 2.1 million files were taken. According to a report from Insider Gaming, the hack’s legitimacy has been substantiated with evidence.
The stolen data reportedly includes the entire source code for Ready or Not, along with code and performance test results indicating that the game was being developed for release on consoles. Insider Gaming stated they were provided with images of Ready or Not running on a PlayStation 4 test kit. Moreover, the breached data contains build information for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. While no evidence was shown in the report, Insider-Gaming is confirming this themselves.
The hacking group that caused the breach initially declared they obtained the developer’s data in March. Despite the seriousness of the situation, Void Interactive has not publicly admitted the breach or disclosed its reaction to these threats. We won’t know how they will take this or what may happen. Essentially, this is one of the worst things to happen to a development studio.
The recent breach could have serious consequences. Leaked source code might lead to unauthorized copies of Ready or Not, or versions with malicious code. Stolen console builds could seriously delay or even stop plans to release the game on those platforms. Additionally, this incident may damage Void Interactive’s reputation and make players question the ongoing security of Ready or Not. If it ever collects data, that kind of thing is vulnerable.
According to Insider Gaming’s report, it seems that the player data and personal information of Void Interactive staff have not been compromised.
At the moment, it’s not clear whether the developers will negotiate with the ransom group or how they plan to lessen the lasting impact of this data breach. We’ll have to keep an eye out and wait for this to play out.
