Moons of Darsalon, an upcoming sci-fi and action platformer from indie developer Dr. Kucho! Games and publisher Astrolabe Games, will officially launch on April 19th, 2023. It will be available on Steam, where users can wishlist the game today. You can watch the new release date trailer on the Dr. Kucho! Games YouTube channel here:
Moons of Darsalon immediately makes an impression with its colorful, inspired art design, as well as its unexpected AI features and physics.
The stages in today’s trailer look absolutely gorgeous, with a very specific retro haze and levels of detail that are uncommon for indie platformers. The environments boast multiple layers of vibrant artwork, with just the right dose of nostalgia.
Moons of Darsalon is brimming with 50’s sci-fi charm, akin to Forbidden Planet and Flash Gordon comics, as well as a touch of Starship Troopers.
Presumably, that’s where today’s trailer was inspired to use the phrase “the only good alien is a dead alien”, which has controversial roots. It’d be nice if Moons of Darsalon were also filled with Verhoeven’s clever social commentary, but it seems to be aiming for simple fun.
The physics really have an immersive quality to them, since so many different elements react at once. The movement comes off surprisingly smooth in today’s trailer. Momentum in the air and wheel responses on land have a lot of interactions that are easily distinguishable, even in the brief footage revealed today.
Moons of Darsalon is clearly a more successful elaboration on Pilots Of Darsalon, Dr. Kucho! Games’ own predecessor from 2020. Conceptually, the rescue mission is fine, but it will surely be much improved by the AI features. The way that players can also control the NPCs is a terrific touch, and certainly ambitious.
