The new game was developed by Brace Yourself Games. They’re indie devs from Canada, and they were also the original creators of the NecroDancer series, which began with the roguelike rhythm title Crypt of the NecroDancer.

The game became a massive hit by successfully blending dungeon-crawler mechanics, the urgency of roguelike gameplay, and the addictive demands of good timing. It was one of the first innovative twists on the rhythm genre.

The genre may seem like something niche, but it’s currently seeing a boost in popularity thanks to Gun Jam and Metal: Hellsinger. These new titles use first-person shooter elements and 3D map progression.

But for fans of the NecroDancer series, the right soundtrack is more than enough, and sometimes players prefer a simpler design. It’s a little more casual, and it arguably shifts the focus onto the music. Besides, the familiar, cute art design of the NecroDancer series is still as fun as the music.

Players will assume the role of Cadence, who must travel around repairing rifts in the modern world. There’ll be rift mode, minigames, and boss battles.

The trailer also reveals that the new standalone title has more than a few references to other rhythm games that either influenced or followed NecroDancer. This makes it a celebration of the genre, and more inviting for newcomers. Although the ongoing NecroDancer story is hardly the point of a rhythm game, it can be fun to follow.
