Risen, the hit fantasy RPG from developer Piranha Bytes, has just released a brand-new trailer for an upcoming port. It is scheduled to launch on January 24th, 2023, and it will be available on PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and the Nintendo Switch. You can watch today’s new trailer for the port on publisher THQ Nordic’s YouTube channel here:

Risen first launched back in 2009, an earlier open world game with a truly expansive and immersive experience. Faranga island has a detailed and unique environment, bolstered by interesting cultural influences.

Alongside Risen’s gritty attitude and extensive features, it developed enough personality to stand out from the countless RPGS in the genre. The creature designs were inventive and fun. So, fans responded positively to the game, which eventually spawned two sequels.

It’s been well over a decade now, and there may not be as much of an audience in these days of Elden Ring and other AAA titles that offer an equal share of freedom or adventure.

But there are many potential improvements for Risen. Especially after the Xbox 360 port, which was notoriously bad. It’s a little surprising that the devs didn’t invest in porting the game for next-gen consoles too, which doesn’t inspire a whole lot of confidence.

However, any port is better than none at all, and committing to next-gen would take a tremendous amount of work. Also, while Risen was a success, it’s also been lost over time a bit. Avoiding next-gen consoles will allow the game to reach a wider audience, and renew some interest. If Risen succeeds, fans could potentially see the following two sequels get a remaster too, which culminated in 2015.
