The first Rivals of Aether is an indie platform fighting game in the same genre as Super Smash Bros. and Brawhalla. Rivals was first released in March 2017 before being ported to the Nintendo Switch in 2020. This fighting game is about to get a sequel, with the announcement of Rivals 2 coming by 2024.

The Rivals of Aether YouTube channel posted an announcement video showing various characters and levels that will be in the game when it releases.

New 3D Maps and Characters Shown in the Trailer

With a title card by Aether Studios and the music by ResoForce, the announcement trailers get off to an exciting start. The characters and maps already look greatly improved over the pixelated characters from the first game. In addition, the characters and maps are now full 3D models instead of their pixelated versions from the past game.

Like before, it seems that each of the fighters will emphasize different elements of nature. For instance, a tiger looks like Zetteburn with a mane of fire and a poison frog resembling Ranno as the first two fighters shown in the trailer. They each use their elemental powers as they fight across a dojo.

Many, if not all, of the characters from Rivals of Aether will likely return in Rivals 2. In addition, as the game continues its development, fans will probably see more and more classic characters return. Players may also see some new additions to the roster, as the developers have been evolving the surrounding game’s world with spin-offs since.

Moves That Pack a Punch

With the new design choices, the moves look better than ever. In addition, the new 3D playground gives the developers the ability to evolve from past characters while also creating something unique. For example, the poison frog has several interesting traversal abilities, including using his long tongue like a grappling hook.

Another character is shown, a purple bird resembling Wrastor, who can travel across the map using its flight abilities. In the trailer, the character uses this to get away and stomp an enemy out of the map entirely. The lion focuses on decisive strikes that leave its enemy no room to counterattack its combos.

As of now, there’s no further information outside of the announcement trailer. However, at the very least, players can expect more from the Rivals series that has already spawned multiple spin-offs. Aether Studios hopes to have Rivals 2 out by 2024.
