Roblox has recently declared that users’ accounts will be denominated based on the country in which they are registered. This means that the credits in users’ accounts will be converted to their local currency according to current exchange rates. Consequently, any Roblox Gift Cards that do not match the local currency will become unusable.
Update: The news has been updated with the following text, “Please note that digital Robux codes will continue to be redeemable globally.” That should at least allow players to continue to receive gifts and contest winnings from outside of their country.
In an official announcement sent to all players through the Messages section of their account menu, Roblox shared the following details: “Starting the week of April 24, 2023, your Roblox account will be denominated in the country in which your account is registered.” The message further explained that once the change takes place, users will only be able to redeem gift cards in the same currency as their account.
This region-locking implementation could create difficulties for some players, particularly those who have family members living abroad or content creators who want to hold international contests. The new policy may limit the ease and convenience of gifting cards and organizing global events for the Roblox community.
One possible reason behind the change could be to combat fraudulent activities or to maintain compliance with different countries’ regulations concerning virtual currencies. However, the precise motivation for the shift remains unconfirmed by Roblox.
In their announcement, Roblox advised players who have moved or wish to change their account’s denomination to a different currency to contact their support team. The message stated, “If you have moved and would like to change the denomination of your Roblox account to a different currency, or if you are having any other Roblox Gift Card redemption issues, please contact us at www.roblox.com/support.”
The region-locking policy may lead to confusion and frustration for some users, especially those who have accumulated gift cards in different currencies or frequently participate in international events. As the Roblox community adapts to this new policy, it remains to be seen if further clarifications or adjustments will be made in response to user feedback.
