As gaming extends all over the world, it is natural that communication can be problematic between language barriers. Roblox is seeking to alleviate these issues with the introduction of their own machine translation solution, known as Roblox Translate. While it hasn’t been implemented in all of the games and experiences across the platform, it marks a step forward in this kind of technology.

The staff at Roblox claims that this new software is more accurate than solutions, such as AWS and Google Translate according to the announcement:

First of all, I’d like to announce the launch of Roblox Translate, our in-house machine translation solution! We heard all the complaints about the quality of machine translation in the past, and we wanted to make improvements. We wanted something that we could customize and something that could best integrate with Roblox workflows, so we built our own! And we’re so pleased to share that for Roblox experiences, Roblox Translate is more accurate than other machine translation solutions like AWS or Google Translate!

Automatic translation has been present for some games and experiences on Roblox. This was limited to only the top 10,000 experiences earlier this year. They have now bumped that number up to the top 50,000 experiences, which should make just about every game that sees consistent players have the software available to them.

Roblox currently supports the following languages with automatic translation: Chinese – simplified, Chinese – traditional, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. In the update, they announced that they have just added Thai and Turkish support as well.

Roblox recognizes that this solution is currently not foolproof, and recommends that developers who are seeking manual translation head to the Roblox Talent Hub to find individuals who are willing to translate their experiences into different languages. However, for games that don’t have the funds to hire someone, Roblox Translate at least offers them a solution that they can opt to use.
