Roblox recently announced its expansion to Meta Quest, a leading VR headset. With a current daily user count surpassing 66 million on diverse platforms like mobile devices (iOS and Android), desktops, and Xbox, Roblox now becomes accessible to users aged 13 and up on Meta Quest.
By extending its reach to Meta Quest, Roblox opens a new avenue for developers to bring their creativity to the VR realm. Whether they adapt existing experiences or construct new VR-focused content, developers can now share their work with millions of people on Meta Quest instantaneously.
Roblox’s platform is designed to simplify the process of VR content creation. Traditionally, a VR-focused team was necessary to develop a VR experience. Now, Roblox developers can publish their existing experiences to support VR with minimal additional coding effort, given the platform’s universal design.
In addition, Roblox’s cross-platform compatibility allows Meta Quest users to enjoy experiences together with other Roblox users on Xbox, iOS, Android, and desktop. This compatibility facilitates users to connect, communicate, and express themselves with friends regardless of device or platform. They can explore Roblox’s 3D immersive platform, which introduces new means of interaction.
As for content, once Roblox becomes available on Meta Quest, users gain access to an expansive library of over 15 million active experiences, including games, worlds, and social spaces.
Roblox will soon release an Open Beta on Meta Quest’s App Lab, where feedback from VR users will be gathered. It will allow developers to refine their VR experiences before the full release on the Meta Quest Store. It’s crucial to note that this Open Beta will exclusively support Meta Quest 2 and Meta Quest Pro devices.
As part of the preparations for the launch, Roblox is introducing “VR” as a new device type on the Access page of the Creator Dashboard and the Game Settings panel in Roblox Studio. Developers can use this new feature to control if their experiences can run untethered on Meta Quest 2 and Meta Quest Pro devices. This setting will eventually encompass all officially supported VR headsets.
To ensure the best possible experience, Roblox has automatically updated the Access setting for some of the experiences that use default player scripts to include support for VR devices. If an experience has been flagged as playable on the Meta Quest, “VR” will be checked in the Studio and the Creator Dashboard. This automatic adjustment aims to ensure a swift adaptation and expansion of VR device compatibility.
Roblox also encourages developers who have tested their experiences on Meta Quest and confirmed optimal functionality to enable “VR” as a supported platform. This forms a valuable step towards establishing and expanding early momentum for VR devices.
While Roblox focuses on expanding VR support, the platform reaffirms its commitment to PC VR headsets alongside the new standalone VR mode on Meta Quest, without a PC connection. Currently, experiences published to ‘Desktop’ remain available on PC VR, but in the future, only those published to ‘VR’ will be accessible on PC VR.
