Rocket League, the classic sports racing game from Psyonix, has announced that Item Packs inspired by Star Wars droids will be available between May 4th and May 16th, 2023. The Star Wars crossover rolls out in celebration of May the 4th, featuring vehicles based on R2-D2, C-3PO, BB-8, and K-2SO. The “Droid Packs” will include decals, wheels, and animated toppers for the complete look.

Rocket League is available now on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation and Xbox. You can watch today’s trailer for the upcoming droid content on Rocket League’s official YouTube channel:

It’s immediately clear that both today’s teaser and the collaboration itself are brilliantly handled. The cinematic trailer begins with familiar imagery, in which R2-D2 and C-3PO wander the desert together. Alongside some authentic sound effects, this is some very satisfying fan service. But most importantly, the cosmetics themselves genuinely capture the spirit of the characters.

The devs smartly chose vehicles with a similar shape for each character, making the collaboration pretty seamless. C-3PO’s Fennec has very stiff lines and layers of plating, while BB-8’s Takumi is roundish and friendly enough.

It’s a shame that K-2SO’s Dominus didn’t get a little more screen time, but it’s clear that the devs wanted to emphasize the original trilogy, which is probably a wise decision. It’s surprising that K-2SO was even included to begin with, and their Dominus definitely has an elegant danger in its design.

According to today’s official blog, R2-D2 and BB-8’s Item Packs will go for 800 credits, while C-3PO and K-2SO will cost 500 credits, which isn’t so bad. The only free content in the update will include the “Rust Bucket” title and STAR WARS R2-D2 (Twin Suns) banner.
