PlayStation just announced that last year’s roguelike The Hand of Merlin will finally be available on their latest consoles, arriving on June 14th, 2022 at midnight. So, fans living in Pacific Time will have access beginning on June 13th, 2022, at 9:00 PM.

Here’s the official tweet, which features a new trailer for the game:

This turn-based sleeper hit is distinguished by its Arthurian lore, a fun twist on the genre’s standard formula. The player’s choices can affect the outcome, and even death is permanent in this one. This helped add to the replay value of the game, as encounters are always subject to change.

The addition of sci-fi and horror elements was a natural fit, although it does bring a more generic feel to the game.

Leaning into old-school mythology a bit more would have been greatly beneficial, creating more of its own identity. Camelot and the Grail are the highlights of the game’s personality.

The rogue-lite or roguelike genre doesn’t always translate well to console, but some of the features and gameplay mechanics in The Hand of Merlin should be an improvement over its peers.

Trailer breakdown and review

The trailer in the promo tweet is brief, mainly showing off action rather than the mechanics themselves. The narration basically reiterates how roguelike games work, and begins by simply crediting the engineers and writers.

The promo would be better off describing the highlights of the game, since the acting really undersells it. On the Steam store, fans continue to uphold The Hand of Merlin with “mostly positive” reviews.

The different classes have distinguishable enough roles to affect the gameplay, so strategy is satisfying. And the theme of the core premise is just unique enough for fans of the genre to find enjoyment, providing some clever enemies, scenarios and collectibles.
