Dungeon Drafters, an upcoming adventure RPG with card-based magic from developer Manalith Studios and publisher DANGEN Entertainment, officially launches on April 27th, 2023. Dungeon Drafters’ title is presumably referencing card drafting, and its card system actually looks fairly impressive. It doesn’t just have deckbuilding mechanics, but genuine themed booster packs, which should definitely excite CCG fans. There are several types of boosters, a collection tab, various traits and classic themes.
The devs have taken all these beloved tropes and combined them with some other suitable genres. The tile and turn-based combat approach is smart for a game with card mechanics. It emphasizes strategy and encourages players to adapt in their own creative ways.
Dungeon Drafters may have a lot of nostalgia and a simple premise, but it owns it in all the best ways. The characters and environments also draw from a strangely broad variety of influences. Almost every shot in today’s release date trailer includes a kitchen sink of characters from every kind of fantasy game, and it admittedly works.
It also results in some pretty unique level design, and inventive stages are an important incentive for players to develop totally new decks and strategies. The central town of Dungeon Drafters feels lived-in, sharing an equally rich history with the titular dungeons.
The effects and animations look gorgeous, with bright colors that pop without losing their retro style. Hopefully, there will be as many abilities as today’s trailer suggests, because the official Steam page has set high expectations with an emphasis on combos.
