Stormgate, the highly anticipated real-time strategy game from some developers of StarCraft 2 and Warcraft 3, has blown past its initial funding target on Kickstarter. The project has gotten over $2 million from nearly 28,000 backers. This outpouring of support has unlocked nearly all the ambitious stretch goals that developer Frost Giant Studios outlined.
To get funded is amazing on its own, but to surpass it by this much is incredible. As reported by GamesRadar, the developers initially asked for a modest $100,000 to secure development. However, Stormgate quickly surpassed expectations, unlocking features like profile portraits, advanced hero customization, expanded bot personalities, and new weekly gameplay mutators. A huge community wants the game, and this is helping the development twenty times over.
Now that the funding exceeds $2.3 million, Frost Giant Studios doesn’t have enough planned stretch goals. The Kickstarter campaign, launched to offer a physical Collector’s Edition, has served its purpose and is expected to stop soon. At this point, leave the stretch goals alone; there’s already a lot of work ahead.
Stormgate is slated for a year of early access, during which Frost Giant Studios will focus on polishing the editor, 3v3 mode, various factions, and other core aspects. There’s a lot to add to the game, so there’s no official launch date named yet.
For those who haven’t played Warcraft or Starcraft, the community for these games is huge, but there aren’t many games like them anymore. The closest we have is Age of Empires IV, but that game isn’t fantasy. Essentially, you make bases and get troops to fight in battles over a small warzone.
It was once a beloved genre that hasn’t gotten the attention it needs, and it seems like Stormgate will fix that.
