RuneScape ushers in the new year with some adjustments to Death Costs in addition to a new special event offering rare boss drops.

With today’s update in RuneScape, the Death Cost will be at least 80 percent lower than it was before. The Ring of Death also receives an update to maintain its viability. Players will now be reborn on the battlefield with a debuff that increases tick damage over three minutes upon death.

Today also marks the arrival of Grand Exchange Tariffs. Since deaths accounted for almost 60 percent of the gold drain, the economy had to be rebalanced to support the new death costs. As a result, the tariff will now take two percent of the gold from every transaction made on the Grand Exchange to make up the difference.

Raptor has arrived at War’s Retreat in preparation for the new special event, Raptor’s Rampage, and he will provide a helpful boost that may be activated once per day until January 22nd. Once the event has begun, the next boss a player kills will provide them three rolls on the boss’s rare drop table. This implies that there will be more opportunities for players to get rare boss drops. However, there are a few exceptions which may be summarized as follows:

  • Telos and Arch-Glacor will not be subject to this benefit due to their Streak mechanics.
  • Raids receive a flat percentage increase for loot and do not consume the buff.
  • Bosses without rare loot will not be affected or consume the buff.

Meanwhile, an extra members-only event is also underway where they may earn a Pirate Key (up to a maximum of 12 per week) for every day they log in or hour they play the game. Spend the keys at Frank’s shop in Port Sarim, to get a random assortment of treasures. Frank’s Free Chest is available until January 31st.

RuneScape also made several fixes in today’s update, which you can read more about on the RuneScape website.
