Scrap Riders, the post-apocalyptic beat-em-up from Games For Tutti and Microids, has finally announced a new launch date after being delayed. The game is now expected to roll out for othe PC and Nintendo Switch on January 9th, 2023. Here’s the official announcement from publisher Microids:

The game was originally supposed to launch on September 21st, and was then delayed to November 2022, which of course didn’t work out. The devs and publisher cited the need to polish the game “here and there”, remaining pretty vague but apologizing to curious fans:

Scrap Riders has been delayed a couple of months yet again, which unfortunately kills hype for an indie game that was already small enough to struggle for interest.

It also shakes trust that the game will actually release in January, but at least studios have discovered how effective open communication with the fans can be. Publisher Microids has upheld the same honesty with other titles, such as its delay of Flashback 2.

As long as the launch of any game is successful, even multiple delays are usually acceptable. It’s always more important for a game to function properly, and delays are honestly more noticeable for AAA titles anyway.

The setting, story, and addition of point-and-click mechanics of Scrap Riders is certainly an intriguing hook. It includes nods to Mad Max with a cyberpunk art design, offering just enough character to distinguish itself from the parade of indies that heavily rely on retro nostalgia.

The fact that it even has a story, along with a sense of humor, is crucial in that regard. But the inclusion of “investigation” is definitely a key ingredient, creating an unusual kind of contrast for the speed and chaos of old school beat-em-ups.
