Dredge, a stylish little indie that features adventures and monsters across the sea, just released an official announcement trailer that included new information about its launch plan. The game will be available on Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X or S. It’s currently expected to release some time in 2023.

Black Salt Games are small indie devs based in New Zealand, and Dredge is their only primary project. It’s been a long time since Dredge had any news.

Curious fans have only had the preview trailer released as far back as July of 2021, which explained some of the core mechanics of the game. It summarized crucial details like fishing and selling your catch, upgrading your ship, and surviving various monster attacks.

You can review last year’s footage from the devs’ official YouTube channel here:

The newest trailer doesn’t explain any of the gameplay, although it added some new shots. Instead, the trailer successfully builds atmosphere, eventually surprising newcomers who missed the preview trailer last year with a sudden monster attack.

The art design is cozy yet interesting, and becomes mysterious or thrilling at will, akin to FAR: Changing Tides, another ocean adventure filled with perils and ship management. However, there don’t seem to be any puzzles on the horizon for Dredge yet.

The music definitely helps reinforce Dredge’s experience, and if the mechanics all function properly, this game is going to be a truly special indie. There are a variety of actions like treasure-hunting or meeting locals that weren’t necessary, and these efforts to expand the worldbuilding are much appreciated.

The monster designs are also neat, with some Lovecraftian references, which is an ongoing trend as seen in The Last Case of Benedict Fox’s recent gameplay reveals.
