An official statement has announced that Sea of Stars will be delayed until sometime in 2023, explaining that the move was essential to ensure the quality of life for the creative teams and the finished game.
Here’s the tweet from Sea of Stars’ Twitter feed, which offers some nice apologies, thanks and promises:
Sea of Stars is being developed by Sabotage Studio, indie devs from Quebec City that are best known for their platformers like the Messenger series.
Their unique approach to classic mechanics has won over a lot of fans, especially for the Messenger and its sequel. So, the Sea of Stars delay is pretty disappointing, since the plot is actually a prequel story for those two surprise hits.
Sea of Stars is going to be an RPG, turn-based adventure game about two Children of the Solstice who must use magic to defeat the evil alchemist Fleshmancer.
While the art style for Sea of Stars pays homage to old school games, it still has pristine graphics. Also, the map traversal goes beyond a typical grid format. Players can freely swim, climb or interact with ledges in ways that classics never offered.
Sea of Stars will also offer interactive features like sailing, fishing and mini-games. This story-driven game also provides dynamic time-of-day lighting, which perfectly fits the protagonists’ powers.
Once again, Sabotage Studio proves that it understands how to cleverly update retro style games with a modern approach.
While the team has delayed Sea of Stars, they also suggest that a “playable slice” could be released for everyone this year. This should include a small demo from the beginning of the story, which likely already completed.
Fans have responded with a surprising amount of patience, thanks to Sabotage’s honesty and accumulated trust. Delaying a game to succeed is always preferable to unrealistic and failed promises. Still, a playable demo will definitely help renew interest as time goes by.
