Just four months after setting sail, Sea of Stars has already charted a remarkable course. It’s an incredibly popular indie game that has hit player milestones Triple-A games would love. The studio has announced its newest player base number and even sent out a press release.
According to a tweet, Sea of Stars has amassed over 4 million players across all of the platforms it’s available for. At this point, it’s not just luck that’s driving the game. People really do like the story and gameplay. It takes place in the same universe as Sabotage Studio’s acclaimed debut, The Messenger. Players step into the boots of Valen and Zale to navigate islands and dungeons.
The gameplay is very tactical, and you have to think to outsmart the enemies. I can see how people could like the gameplay, but the true love is in the story and characters. Valen is a stoic veteran, and Zale is the lively newcomer. It’s a classic buddy cop story in this world. As you’d expect, there’s witty banter, heartfelt moments, and the occasional dose of slapstick humor.
Sea of Stars also has the benefit of hitting the bone of nostalgia. The game captures the spirit of exploration, discovery, and character growth that came from older games. Mixed with this is the pixelated graphics that most players love.
The game has won accolades like “Best Indie Game” at The Game Awards and Golden Joysticks. The press release spoke on the upcoming DLC, Throes of the Watchmaker, coming soon. We imagine this milestone is just one of many because four months is a short time, but they’re still getting players. We’ll see if this keeps up, but it’s hard to imagine it won’t continue to grow.
