Settlement Survival, the hit city builder strategy game from developer and publisher Gleamer Studio, is officially getting a mobile release on March 9th, 2023. Many fans of the city builder genre quickly drew comparisons to Banished, which released several years prior and also had players developing or protecting their townspeople in a new home.
Both games are considerably ambitious, but naturally, Settlement Survival had the opportunity elaborate on some of those mechanics in interesting ways. The trading, stress, and management mechanics all received a lot of praise. It also leads to some pretty amusing failures, so losing a town early on won’t be purely disappointing.
Settlement Survival is arguably a more challenging game, and city builders tend to benefit from finding creative new aspects to manage. The density strikes a good balance, and it doesn’t rely on the global mechanics of something like Civilization. It keeps the theme more intimate and concentrated.
There is just enough complexity to give the player a better sense of freedom, too. Player decisions continue to matter once you develop a sprawling home. Also, the technical side of things has generally been effective or smoothed out over time.
Settlement Survival should make a great addition for mobile devices. There’s plenty of gameplay, with a straightforward loop. The graphics are simple, but they still feel colorful and crisp, so it would look just fine on mobile devices too.
However, the city building is also sort of a delicate process, so it may not be so easy to cast it aside and pick up where you left off after a while.
