Shadows of Doubt has an astonishing breadth of mechanics, any of which would ordinarily justify a game of its own, especially in the indie scene.
Today’s trailer shows off some of its more basic features, emphasizing stealth and investigation. But there is also a clear view of the art design and mood. Shadows of Doubt blends traditional noir imagery like downpours and neon, with the blocky simplicity of Minecraft. But the sheer darkness and brilliant soundtrack keep the atmosphere tense rather than friendly.
Also, it may have been that simplicity that allowed the game to pursue a fully simulated sandbox city, which is noted in the official Steam page. The in-game world feels more expansive, detailed, and alive than most AAA games can muster. That’s not only due to the environment itself, but the independence of the characters that populate it.
That kind of simulation also keeps the story on point, which balances out the sandbox setting. There is a remarkable level of freedom for players to investigate as they see fit, choosing what evidence to seek out and what rules to break. But characters will continue going about their business, so there would still be a strong sense of urgency and consequence.
Shadows of Doubt promises to tick every single box for fans of all its featured genres. Although the sci-fi elements are a little light, anything too flashy would compromise the tone.
