The Shantae series of games have been mesmerizing audiences since the first title was released over 20 years ago in 2002, with multiple games released since then. It’s now come to light that developer WayForward has a new Game Boy Advance game titled Shantae’s Advance and it is expected to release in early 2024.
Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution is billed as a lost chapter of the Shantae series that was thought lost to time, but it has now been revealed to be in development over the last 20 years. In partnership with Limited Run Games, WayForward is releasing this completely new adventure on the Game Boy Advance over a decade and a half since it became less used.
In a blog post detailing the new title, WayForward community manager Chris Hoffman details how the game that was once canceled has been resurrected for a once-in-a-lifetime release on its original intended platform. The team at WayForward has made sure to use GBA-era development tools to ensure the game is as polished and reminiscent of the old-school titles as possible.
Shantae Series Director Matt Bozon describes the enjoyment the team had recreating this lost Shantae adventure, saying, “After reuniting as a team, we restored the original game demo, and now are working hard to complete the full game on original hardware! This isn’t a demake or a new retro-style game, but an actual GBA-era title that was lost to time.”
The publishing rights for this title will be carried out by Limited Run Games, a known entity in the gaming industry for its willingness to fund out-of-the-box gaming ventures.
