Ship of Fools, the sea adventure roguelite designed for co-op gameplay from developer Fika Productions and publisher Team17, has released the new “Great Lighthouse” update today. The update includes a variety of new end-game content, with more abilities, quests, and more. Also, fans can now purchase the Deep Sea Duo DLC, for the additional Jules and Angus fools.

Ship of Fools is available now on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation and Xbox. However, the Great Lighthouse Update is only out on PC. A console release is currently slated for September 2023. You can watch today’s full update trailer on the Team17 YouTube channel:

Ship of Fools’ new update centers on unlocking 15 brightness levels in the Lighthouse. Completing each of them reworks a few mechanics to create new challenges.

However, players will need to beat the entire game every time. This was probably designed to maximize content, and it is intended to be a hard mode gameplay loop, after all. But the individual brightness levels don’t really seem to shake things up enough to justify an entire replay for every single one of them. The official Steam page explains that the first level simply increases enemy toughness and strength.

It’s clear there are plenty of new encounters and items, but it may have been more impressive if the content wasn’t spread so thin across the update.

Pacing aside, there are some clever little additions in the Great Lighthouse update. And the new Deep Sea Duo DLC looks fantastic. Jules and Angus are every bit as inventive and charming as the other fools, with playful names and themes that could have been introduced just as smoothly at launch.
