Iron Lung, the minimalist submarine horror indie from developer and publisher David Szymanski, will officially be adapted into a movie. Popular YouTuber Mark Fischbach, otherwise known as Markiplier, is set to direct and star in the film.
The original game launched in March of 2022, and is available now on PC via Steam or the Nintendo Switch. You can watch an official teaser for the upcoming film on Markiplier’s YouTube channel:
Iron Lung is a wise selection for a film adaptation. Despite some pricey effects here and there, it’s still a single-setting story with a silent protagonist, accomplishing very much while using very little. The game is bleak, claustrophobic, unrelenting, and has a surprisingly rich mythology.
Today’s teaser is deceptively complex, despite the simple presentation. Viewers are introduced to the game footage itself, suggesting the film should be rather faithful.
And the way the camera slowly rotates into an actual set doesn’t just emulate the sensation of being in a submarine. It also captures the same sense of creeping dread and mystery of the source material. The teaser is also careful to leave viewers in a few seconds of pure darkness.
If the director can demonstrate that kind of comprehension in under a minute, then the rest has the potential to be quite remarkable.
Given that, it will be very interesting to see how much original content is included in the film, at least to explore the existing lore. After all, Iron Lung was a deliberately short game, and a feature adaptation would simply need more to work with.
Fortunately, the original developer has been contributing to the filmmaking process too, and even has a cameo according to a new tweet today:
This should be very exciting for horror fans, and if the Iron Lung adaptation is successful, it could potentially encourage a variety of similar projects.
