Civilization, one of the most beloved and enduring strategy and 4X games in the industry, has just revealed that it’s finally going to get a brand-new game in the series. The most recent title is Civilization VI, which first launched in 2016. Here’s the big announcement from the official Civilization Twitter feed:
No other details were released at this time. So, fans are still curious about the themes and elaborations the devs might expect. There is no title to nitpick for hints, and Civilization took fan responses as an opportunity for some light teasing:
Civilization 6 has received some fine support over the years, including two major expansions to retain interest and add replay value. The Gathering Storm expansion was a brilliant concept, and mostly received praise.
Natural disasters are a significant part of life, and they created a highly unusual level of unpredictability. As fun as it is for new characters to let players explore new cultures and strategies, they don’t significantly adjust the gameplay loop. It’s a simple, high concept introduction that makes it clear the Civilization series still has plenty to offer, even after all these years.
Civilization 6 has been getting by with the Leader Passes lately, and only just yesterday, they added Rulers of the Sahara. For a brief recap of the Leader Pass addition, you can watch a First Look trailer on Civilization’s YouTube channel here:
There are still two more Leader packs to go, including “Great Builders” and “Rulers of England”. So, Civilization is probably going to reserve its larger announcements until then. But today was a welcome surprise, and a title should be revealed sometime soon. The upcoming Leader Pass updates were detailed in an official tweet earlier this month:
Today’s announcement suggests that the new title started development today, so that may give fans a better idea of the rest of the development schedule.
