Slopecrashers, an upcoming arcade-style snowboarding game with animal racers, has just revealed that online multiplayer will be added to the game. Previously, it was only expected to support local co-op. A release window has not been confirmed for the game, but you can wishlist the game on Steam now. Developer and publisher Byteparrot announced today that Beta testing will begin “very soon”:
Slopecrashers absolutely fits the mold of classic arcade racing. It blends vibrant and colorful environments with anthropomorphic animals, similar to Tanuki Sunset, which was recently ported to major consoles last November.
Hopefully, Slopecrashers will follow suit, because it seems to promise an equal measure of charm, cuteness, and frenetic energy. It even provides strange settings that wouldn’t ordinarily accompany a snowboard, and players will get pickup items to battle and defend with.
The devs smartly combined old school racing with elements of that signature kart racing flavor, which requires proper physics and a good sense of humor.
It’s much harder to find local multiplayer games than online multiplayer, and online modes will sort of impose on the intended nostalgia. But it should also provide more replay value, and Slopecrashers will probably find more audiences with that approach.
This feature will open up all sorts of possibilities, especially if the game ends up getting ported to major platforms. That includes rolling out on PS Plus or Xbox Game Pass, where players are more likely to try smaller games.
Surprisingly, Slopecrasher’s Steam page also mentions a full Campaign and other modes, boasting more content than most retro homages. Arcade is generally more streamlined than that. Embracing modern features should help the game distinguish itself from its countless peers.
