Sonic Frontiers has officially released a direct look at the combat mechanics and animation, the most divisive part of recently shared footage.

Fans have mostly been displeased with the battle scenarios shown off in the first several minutes of gameplay that was released just a couple of days ago on June 1st. Now IGN First, a series of exclusives, continues to celebrate Sonic’s birthday month by showing off his latest combat moves.
Trailer breakdown and reveals
The trailer starts off with Sonic battling a mass of spheres that was briefly seen in the first preview. When hit, Sonic still loses rings as usual. Sonic’s combat mainly resembles that of Sonic Heroes, hitting enemies with a series of magnetic bounces.
However, some new footage reveals that Sonic’s moveset is more complex and fun that previously seen. Racing in a circle to cause wind strikes was only shown to solve puzzles before, but it seems that he can also do that to create a stationary whirlwind attack on anything.
In fact, it’s later shown in the trailer that Sonic can envelop multiple enemies at once with this attack. It’s also used in an apparent boss battle that appears, too. Sonic first attacks key points of a giant enemy, triggering its defenses, then uses the whirlwind to lift up the giant’s foot and attack a weak spot.
The way that Sonic Frontiers handles scale is pretty neat, and the giant must be defeated in simple but fun phases.
Sonic also uses a variety of punch and kick combos on regular enemies, including a cyclone kick that sends him directly into the air, and a Chun-Li like flurry that fires projectiles of wind.
Overall, this may not change any minds with fans that were already frustrated, since the mechanics are a little old school. But some of the new moves that were revealed do look enjoyable, as it’s clear that players will face a fair variety of enemies to interact with in creative ways.
