Sony Electronics has revealed it will continue its partnership with Square Enix on the popular Final Fantasy VII remake project, with the second game, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, set for release on February 29, 2024, exclusively for PlayStation 5.
Sony likely issued this public statement for several reasons, but I have my own guesses. They likely want to generate excitement for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth’s upcoming release, showcase their TVs and Inzone products as ideal companions for the game, and, of course, potentially reaffirm their lucrative partnership with Square Enix in the gaming market.
Sony has been close with Square Enix for a long time, and Final Fantasy is the crux of that relationship. Sony tends to get exclusivity with Square Enix’s games and even gets some early. It is likely that this is a way to remind everyone that only PlayStation is confirmed to be getting the Final Fantasy VII games. Luckily, Xbox has been able to get the later games, but since Sony and Square Enix are only becoming closer, that could be debated in the future.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth picks up after the escape from Midgar in the first remake, following Cloud and his companions as they chase Sephiroth across the vast world beyond the city. To coincide with the launch, Sony is promoting its line of TVs, claiming they offer the ultimate gaming experience for PS5 owners. I’m not going to help advertise the Sony TVs, so you can read the full article for that part. A whole chunk of this release was to promote a TV and electronics lineup from Sony.
They didn’t discuss how things are benefitting the two financially, but since Sony did put this out, they’re likely doing well. Sony wouldn’t want to remind Square Enix of their partnership if it wasn’t doing very well. So we know that things are only going up for the two companies.
