Featured Sony Purchases Bungie

It looks like the war for gaming content is starting to heat up even more! After Microsoft made the big announcement that they have purchased Activision Blizzard for a whopping $68.7 billion, it looks like Sony is now getting into the acquisition game, because it has just been announced that they will be purchasing Bungie, the creators of the Destiny franchise.

According to GameIndustry.biz, it looks like the purchase will be for $3.6 Billion. While that is a whole lot of money, it is obviously nowhere near the amount that Microsoft shelled out for Activision Blizzard. However, this is just another move towards these major platforms purchasing up gaming properties to get them exclusively under their wing.

Bungie is soon releasing an expansion for Destiny 2, called Witch Queen and has another IP that it is currently working on. While Destiny 2 isn’t as popular as it once was, the gaming studio has continued to update it and bring new features and gameplay to it. It will be interesting to see if Sony decides to bring it completely in house with the game currently being available on Xbox Game Pass.

This acquisition adds to the massive amount of money that has been thrown around recently by companies in the gaming space. Not only did Microsoft purchase Activision Blizzard. Take Two also made a large purchase, and acquired Zynga for around $12.7 Billion. This move was seen as Take Two looking to add its ever popular GTA franchise to mobile platforms in the near future.

The acquisition of Bungie adds to the convoluted history of the company. It was originally acquired by Microsoft in 2000, but became independent again in 2007. Later they signed a 10-year deal with Activision in 2010 to then go independent again in 2019. Sony joins the party in 2022, but we will see if Bungie eventually gets the urge to free themselves from ownership again in the future.

With Sony rumored to be creating a product that will compete with Xbox Game Pass, don’t be surprised to see more major acquisitions of well-known gaming brands in the future!
