PlayStation has been moving a few of its exclusive games to PC after a year of release. We’ve seen it with God of War, Spider-Man, and The Last of Us. However, it looks like games exclusive to PlayStation may get trophies added to their ports too.
Using one of their scanners, TrueTrophies found that there is a new category for PlayStation trophies called “PSPC”, which we take to mean PlayStation PC. They couldn’t find out what games it was for because the list the category was attached to had the simple name of “Trophy Set.” My guess is Trophy Set is a stand-in for a game and they’re seeing if the category would attach correctly.
This may mean that they’re in the final stages of testing and we may see this attachment to games that will end up on PC or are already on PC. That isn’t good news because of the way that these kinds of things operate. To make this work, you’d need the game to operate on a system that Sony owns. We think this may be something that comes with a dreaded new launcher for users to download.
Trophies exclusive to a service tend to mean that they need to be operated by that service. PlayStation PC sounds like a service you’d use on PC to play PlayStation games. Like Ubisoft’s launcher that many gamers hate, PlayStation may make one themselves and add trophies to it.
That’s just speculation but it makes a lot of sense, and this means that instead of just competing with Microsoft, Steam will also get Sony as an opponent. We will have to wait and see where these trophies go, but we don’t imagine Sony will let Steam exclusively host their games for much longer. This kind of thing feels like it’d be inevitable.
