PlayStation continues to expand its efforts against the competition, by introducing its own loyalty program that will allow players to earn rewards. It will be free to join, and while it’s expected to launch “later this year”, a final release date hasn’t been announced.

Here’s the big reveal from PlayStation’s official Twitter account, shortly after Twitter suffered a widespread outage:

Players will need to complete different campaigns and activities to receive rewards. This can be either loyalty points or Digital Collectibles, which cannot be traded or sold.

The collectibles might include digital representations of figurines, devices and more with a variety of rarity. These are somewhat odd, capitalizing on the similar nature of NFTs, and it has quickly divided fans. Some have tried to point out that Star’s collectibles could be closer to traditional cosmetics. But these digital collectibles don’t seem to be applicable in-game.

However, loyalty points are much more tangible and interesting. They can be redeemed for PSN wallet funds. Also, members who are also subscribed to PlayStation Plus will earn even more points for PlayStation Store purchases.

Some of the activities that earn rewards will ask players to win tournaments, trophies and more. But a Monthly Check-In will reward members every month for simply playing any game.

This is clearly meant to contest Xbox, which has very similar programs. Game Pass subscribers get perks that sometimes include third parties, and Monthly or Weekly “Quests” tie in with the Microsoft Rewards system.

Overall, fans are naturally pleased that PlayStation has finally caught up with its competitors, like Xbox and Nintendo. The official blog notes that PlayStation Stars will “continue to evolve over time”, so it’ll be interesting to see what features unfold.
