Sony has just released a new trailer for their film based on a true story, featuring the classic racing franchise Gran Turismo from developer Polyphony Digital and publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment.
The movie is slated to premiere on August 11th, 2023, from visionary director Neill Blomkamp. The cast will include Archie Madekwe, Djimon Hounsou, Orlando Bloom, and David Harbour. The latest installment of the game series, Gran Turismo 7, is available now on PlayStation. You can watch today’s new movie trailer on the Sony Pictures YouTube channel:
Today’s trailer will surely surprise fans of the series, since the story is inspired by real events. Given the absolute failure of so many game adaptations on film, this was a very clever way to incorporate gameplay without inventing an unnecessary plot.
It will also likely boost sales for the game, because today’s teaser makes it clear that the story will value and celebrate gamer culture itself. The notion that playing Gran Turismo can lead to a literal racing career really emphasizes the franchise’s longtime goal of detailed authenticity.
Additionally, true events will surely appeal to more casual moviegoers who are justifiably disinterested in video game adaptations. This proved to be very successful for Tetris (2023). It helps that the Gran Turismo cast is filled with stars, and there’s a good balance of humor and drama that are both hinged on the reality of the situation.
The trailer probably revealed far too much, perhaps even the majority of the movie, but the story is already easily accessible for anyone to discover. It looks like a classic sports story, with the inspiring tale of an underdog and all, since the protagonist is totally new to the racing world. But the unique nature of their path is definitely intriguing.
