Spells & Secrets, an upcoming roguelike indie set in a wizarding school, has just revealed that physical editions will be rolled out on June 30th, 2023. Developed by Alchemist Interactive and rokaplay, the physical copies will be available on PlayStation 5 and the Nintendo Switch.
Spanish game publisher and distributor Tesura Games tweeted the news out today, but it was accompanied by a teaser that’s presented in English:
Spells & Secrets is distinctly influenced by the Wizarding World, but there is a very different flavor to it. That should make it a handy alternative for those players who don’t feel like investing in the Wizarding World right now.
The art design and general tone of Spells & Secrets aims for cute and cuddly, and in that regard, the style should be pretty satisfying. The creature designs are adorable, and probably the highlight of the game. There’s a fair variety of them, and they’re surprisingly central to the story of Spells & Secrets too.
Although it’s clear the devs wanted to make something playful, there is a solid range of mechanics. Some of its features, such as the ability to customize your character, can be somewhat unusual for indie games.
Supporting both local and online cooperative gameplay is surely one of othe big selling points, though. It’s probably a difficult mechanic to smooth out for indie devs. But adding teamwork to Spells & Secrets is a fun way to reinforce its friendly approach.
Hopefully, the physical port for PlayStation 5 and the Switch will be able to incorporate this smoothly. Cooperative games on console might be a little more demanding, since the mechanic can be lost in translation with some of these more complex features.
