Spooky Spirit Shooting Gallery, an offbeat indie shooter that’s being brought to the West from publisher Aksys Games, will officially launch on April 27th, 2023. It will only be available on the Nintendo Switch, and there’s no word on other platform support. Here’s the big announcement from Aksys Games’ official Twitter feed, including a brief new gameplay teaser:

Aksys Games first announced that they had licensed Spooky Spirit Shooting Gallery for the Switch a couple of months ago, using Japanese footage. It’s always interesting to see how titles translate in the West, but this strange little shooter seems fairly intact. All of the titular spirits and environments also happen to be strongly influenced by Japanese culture, giving it plenty of personality.

However, the tone and gameplay mechanics are anything but accessible. It’s basically a festival game shooter, similar to an old school arcade cabinet. But players will get to progress through a haunted house as well, according to Aksys Games’ official page for the game.

As you may have guessed from the title, Spooky Spirit Shooting Gallery is geared towards younger players, and in that regard it’s certainly very colorful. There will also be cooperative and competitive modes, which will encourage friends and family to try out something simple from Japan, in this case Nippon Columbia.

The character designs and environments are surely pretty odd for anyone unfamiliar with these types of games, but that could very well add to its appeal. Each of the spirits are inspired by Japanese folklore, which is certainly intriguing. There will also be over a dozen different minigames to explore. Still, it is a little surprising to see a $39.99 price tag on Aksys Games’ pre-order page for the game.
