Star Ocean: The Divine Force is the latest installment in the classic franchise from Square Enix, and the devs just released their first “Mission Report”. This includes a few minutes of footage, narrating details about the cast of characters and how the combat mechanics will work.
Here’s the official tweet from Star Ocean’s feed, hinting that even more mission reports will help the devs communicate with fans about updates and more:
Earlier today, Star Ocean’s sixth entry got its official release date trailer, revealing that the game is expected to launch on October 27th, 2022. You can review the full trailer on Square Enix’s YouTube channel here:
The first mission report begins by establishing the new story and how this intertwines the characters. A battleship guns down the simple merchant vessel Ydas, captained by Raymond Lawrence, who survives in an escape pod and must seek out his lost crew.
Raymond then meets Laeticia Aucerius, a Crown Princess hoping to save her kingdom. Players can choose to play either protagonist, reinforcing the signature decision-making of the franchise.
Either character will result in a fun supporting cast including Albaird, Elena, Nina, Midas, and the mechanical life form “D.U.M.A.”, who plays a large role in map traversal and combat. D.U.M.A. appears to carry players around in much of the game footage released today.
Next, the mission report promises vast environments and unique enemies to conquer in parties of four. Performing the right actions will trigger stronger moves, and each character will have their own abilities, adding more strategy to the franchise.
Surprisingly, players can choose between fluid action or “Stop Mode”, which will give players an opportunity to reconsider their battle decisions.
