Steam has just rolled out a brand-new “Steam Replay” mechanic today, allowing players to review all of their key moments from an entire year. A new trailer shows off all of the key stats that players can access, including a list of your newest devices, games and achievements.
There’s also more detailed information, such as title playtimes and even your percentage of controller playtime. Here’s the full trailer from Steam’s official YouTube channel:
Steam gets points for effort, trying to present Steam Replay’s trailer with a brief sketch beforehand, but it doesn’t really land. It feels especially stale when small studios like Devolver Digital boast genuine wit, even if their 2022 Holiday Special was a deliberate mess. It would’ve been far more beneficial for Steam’s trailer to simply lay out how Steam Replay will work.
Steam Replay promises to let fans reflect on their latest preferences, which might influence future investments. You may not realize how many AAA games you’re playing and seek out a few more indies next year. You might even decide to try out controller gaming, and contribute to the endless (and perfectly civil) debate between controller and mouse-and-key habits.
Steam Replay could also potentially help players figure out which games are only missing an achievement or two, or rediscover a game they put down months ago. So, Steam Replay may seem a little unnecessary, but it does have some practical purposes.
Steam is currently hosting a Winter Sale through January 5th, 2023, ending at 10 AM pacific time. They continue to lead the way in fan communication and support, with a smooth launch for the Steam Deck and unusual levels of honesty.
