Paradox Arc’s fast-paced strategy game, originally titled Nexus: Stellaris, has been renamed “Nexus 5X”. This new title is supposed to reflect the game’s focus on condensed 4X gameplay. In other words, it is a 4X game designed to be completed in roughly an hour. This comes with a release date, too.
The announcement was made in a trailer introducing the game’s main features. The studio director, Dax Ginn, described being caught by his mom playing a 4X game late at night. Dax contacted his friend Adam, who shared that they have been developing a new version to prevent late games called Nexus 5X. A 4X game simply means explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate, while this new x would be something like “eXpress” because it makes it faster.
The trailer features in-game footage accompanied by a voiceover commentary, highlighting the strategic depth and player interaction in Nexus 5X. The commentary mentions “surveying nebulas” and “exploring all of those nebulas” which would be strange to do in a fast game. As the trailer progresses, the lighthearted tone shifts as elements of competition and betrayal surface. The voiceover exclaims “Oh my God, Sam!” and later warns “never trust Sam, just ever!” It’s an intriguing trailer, to be sure.
The change of name is quite interesting. Removing the Stellaris branding might indicate a shift in focus for the spin-off. It may actually be trying to split from the concept of Stellaris, which is a game that takes a long time to finish. It’s unclear whether this means a broader space theme or a separate universe from the established Stellaris lore.
The trailer has announced the official release date at the end. The Nexus 5X is set to launch on Steam on April 18th, 2024. Although details are limited, the trailer presents the Nexus 5X as a welcoming option for 4X strategy fans. This is also a way for newcomers to try out the game without feeling overwhelmed.
The game is meant to provide the genre’s fundamental gameplay in a shortened format suitable for brief play sessions. It’s hard to imagine how that works without taking out many options and dumbing it down. Maybe this is a good idea, but if they took out a lot of the options or micromanagement, it may go over poorly.
We will have to wait and see if this simplified approach and focus on faster gameplay work. The Nexus 5X could attract both long-time 4X gamers and newcomers looking for a more user-friendly experience. However, this depends on details about its features, gameplay, and possible connection to the Stellaris universe being clarified.
