Primitive, an upcoming survivor simulator built with Unreal Engine 5, has just been announced from Games Box and Ultimate Games S.A. with a new trailer. The game can be wishlisted on Steam today, but no other supported platforms are revealed, and a release window hasn’t been set.

To begin with, the game looks absolutely gorgeous thanks to its Unreal Engine 5 build. The environment, as well as the animals and their behavior, promises a very immersive experience and immediately draws comparisons to Far Cry Primal. That was a very unique tangent for the Far Cry series, but it received a fair amount of praise, nonetheless.

There are certainly countless survival sims already available, and many of them suffer from the same setbacks. Additionally, Primitive probably won’t be any more accessible than other resource management and survival games, such as Conan Exiles and the like.

So hopefully, Primitive will have more than technology on its side to earn a loyal fanbase. Although it is definitely boasting superior graphics compared to its competitors, it would be nice to see specific features that help distinguish it.

The new Steam product page promises a storyline, which is hard to produce with settings like this. It also mentions “mental development”, which would be a fun mechanism akin to Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey, where human progression could also potentially be in your hands.

Publisher Ultimate Games S.A. has a host of other simulation games available on Steam, though they mostly focus on fishing. All previous titles have been much, much smaller, and developer Games Box doesn’t have a vast library to compare. But the first images of Primitive look like a very bright beginning for both.
