Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 was a PlayStation 2 juggernaut, and widely considered a highlight of the historical strategy series. Koei Tecmo has explored the Three Kingdoms setting in a variety of franchises, such as their classic hack-and-slash series Dynasty Warriors, a spin-off that put players directly into the action.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 offered a range of factions, historically charged storytelling, and inventive tactical mechanics. Fortunately, the remake will be based on the Power Up Kit version of the original, which included additional features and content that definitely improved the game.

The old Power Up Kit version has also been available on Steam since 2017, but reviews have been harsh on its technical hiccups and translation problems. Ideally, the remake will resolve many of these problems, since there’s been plenty of time to address them.

It’s a delight that the remake is coming to the Nintendo Switch at all, and Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 should make for terrific mobile gameplay. Although there are some finer details and controls that could get a little muddled, the gameplay’s patient, turn-based and narrative approach will be very satisfying on the go.

This remake may be unexpected, but it’s also long overdue. Besides being deeply nostalgic, this is a sweeping epic that includes thoughtful tactics and personal storytelling, making it easy to become immersed.
