Shotgun King: The Final Checkmate, an indie strategy roguelike that mixes shotguns and chess, will officially get console ports on August 24th, 2023. Developer PUNKCAKE Delicieux partnered with publisher Headbang Club for the console versions, which will include a port for Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

In a new blog post on Steam, the devs also announced plans to release all of their other games onto Steam. These titles will be released once every week, beginning on August 3rd, 2023. The schedule will begin with PUNCAKE’s new top-down shooter Antecrypt.
Today’s Steam post also mentioned that “more news for the PC version” of Shotgun King: The Final Checkmate is coming soon. This hints at potential updates, such as bug fixes or even content additions that could later arrive on consoles.
Shotgun King: The Final Checkmate has an amusing, imaginative hook, and the style to successfully pull it off. Its arcade gameplay, retro visuals, and natural sense of comedy have made it a genuine standout among cascades of roguelike peers that do little to spin the genre in any interesting way.
Shotgun King may own its weirdness, but it also boasts streamlined mechanics that are layered enough to keep you surprised and thinking.
A console port for Nintendo Switch is a perfect match, with its breezy runs and playful attitude. But it definitely deserves the wider release, and its gameplay should feel equally accessible and entertaining on other platforms, even if its visuals hardly demand next-gen tech.
