Sons of Valhalla, a strategic action RPG about Vikings from developer Pixel Chest and publisher Hooded Horse, will no longer release this year. According to a new trailer, it will now launch in 2024, and a concrete release date has not been confirmed.
Sons of Valhalla will be available on PC via GOG, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. You can watch today’s delay announcement trailer on the Hooded Horse YouTube channel:
It’s surprising that there doesn’t appear to be an official explanation for the delay, at this time. Normally, the devs and publishers mention some particular issue in a calculated post. For example, Ubisoft’s upcoming free to play shooter XDefiant recently revealed a lengthy statement about its new release window, spelling out their submission process.
Instead, Sons of Valhalla’s latest trailer is the sole announcement, though it is nice to see more gameplay. Left to speculation, it’s likely that Sons of Valhalla probably just needed some more polishing, which is the most common cause for delay. After all, the Steam page does mention that it’s hand-crafted, and that definitely comes through in the art design.
The atmosphere of the beautiful, detailed pixel art in Sons of Valhalla is superb. But Vikings and their mythology aren’t distinct enough to fuel interest on their own, anymore. Fortunately, the attitude and gameplay loop do seem decent enough.
Players will build bases, fortify them, and raid enemies, as the protagonist journeys for revenge against “the Jarl who burned down his home, stole his beloved, and fled to distant England.”
This leans into the gritty mood of typical Viking tales instead of fantasy. As a result, players can also expect the combat to be highly strategic, and you’ll even need to issue orders. This mechanic is often used in RTS games, so it’s a neat twist for the side-scrolling genre.
