In the most recent Nintendo Direct held on August 31st, the company provided an in-depth look into the gameplay of their forthcoming 2D side-scrolling title, Super Mario Bros. Wonder. The game unfolds in the Flower Kingdom, located just beyond the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario and his friends have been invited to this region by Prince Florian, but King Bowser disrupts the peace with plans of his own. Utilizing the mysterious powers of the Wonder flower, Bowser causes chaos throughout the land, compelling Mario and friends to embark on a mission to restore order.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder offers players a diverse landscape to explore, comprising six unique worlds that encircle the central Pedal Isles, totaling seven distinct areas. The game begins in the hilly Pipe Rock Plateau, moving onward to environments such as the chilly foot of a mountain, Fluff Puff Peaks, and the radiant cascades of Shining Falls. The Flower Kingdom also houses a multitude of differing terrains, including arid deserts, dense mushroom forests, and worlds engulfed in molten magma.
Notably, the game offers a large selection of playable characters—Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Toad, and Toadette—each with unique abilities. Yoshi and Nabbit present an easier gameplay experience as they don’t take damage but will lose a life if they fall into pits. A slew of new enemies await players, such as Hobby Cats that mimic player movements, Melon Piranha Plants that spit seeds, and Conducts that fly and stick their beaks where they shouldn’t.
Power-ups add another layer to the gameplay experience. Players can transform into elephants to attack enemies, break blocks, and traverse large gaps. The bubble form allows players to capture and defeat enemies from a distance, while the drill form offers unique capabilities for handling spiky or hard-headed foes. In-game badges provide further customization, enabling abilities like slowing falls, enhancing wall jumps, or speeding underwater.
One of the more unique elements in Super Mario Bros. Wonder is the Wonder flower. Touching this in-game item triggers a “Wonder effect,” causing unexpected changes in the game environment, such as terrain tilts or a sudden stampede of enemies. Wonder seeds can be collected to revert these changes and unlock specific courses.
The game also offers an interactive experience with players worldwide. When connected online, players will notice the live player shadows of others currently in the same course. These shadows can assist by reviving ‘ghosts,’ which are defeated players waiting for revival. An in-game point system called “heart points” tracks helpful activities, such as reviving ghosts and reaching the goal pole together.
For those seeking a collaborative gaming experience, Super Mario Bros. Wonder allows up to four players to play locally on the same Nintendo Switch system. An online option also exists for creating shared rooms with friends, enabling synchronous course entry and even racing through select courses.
As a complement to this title, Nintendo also announced the upcoming release of the Nintendo Switch OLED model Mario Red Edition, launching on October 6th. While the console will not directly affect gameplay for Super Mario Bros. Wonder, it adds an additional layer of engagement for fans of the franchise.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder is set to launch on October 20th, providing players with a complex, feature-rich 2D side-scrolling adventure.
